Comments

Notes:

Parasite on Protea and Leucadendron.

Pollinated by birds (and possibly rodents?)

Seed dispersed by ants!

Has been described as 3 species, but only one species currently upheld in the genus.
Described from the Hex to Peninsula and Hangklip to Riversdale (Cape Plants), but in 15 years of atlassing proteas I have only seen it at Houwhoek to Kleinmond.

Only member of Balanophoraceae in the Cape Flora, although there are other genera and species in s Africa
(see http://ispot.org.za/species_dictionary/Balanophoraceae - and child members).
More on the family at (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balanophoraceae).
Again (after a few years of dissension) thought to be related to the Rootthugs and Mistletoes (see http://ispot.org.za/species_dictionary/Santalales)

Snail?

Why did you make this a snail observation ??
(see http://ispot.org.za/species_dictionary/Achatinoidea )

Fantastic piccies...

Thanx for sharing.

Darn I'm never there when they flower.

Did they smell?

Also if you want more info...

Flowering time

Referring to http://ispot.org.za/node/160119#comment-54936, he stated the obvious, "This observation was flowering in April", and went to fetch another avocado.
