Description: Illustrating epicormic coppicing from buds under the bark. Protea nitida is - with the Wild Almond - the only species in the Cape Proteaceae (and the only one in the subfamily Proteoidaea) which is capable of doing this. All other species are either killed or burned to the ground, resprouting from underground boles (or escape fire in fire-safe habitats - specifically two very close relatives: Protea glabra and rupicola). Xmas 2012 burn: so 5 month old veld (or 5 months of recovery).

Description: Proteaceae wood is highly distinctive. The medullary rays are well developed, and can be seen as dark streaks in cross-section and as a reticulated sieve from the 'outside': it is very porous and transports water very well - so much so that buckets made from Waboom wood leak badly. Why proteas have this wood structure is unknown.

Description: this photo was previously mis-placed in an observation of P. gaguedi at the same site Thanks to Pieter for pointing out the mistake! There were 1 or 2 plants with this appearance (larger curved leaves) co-occurring with plants that we identified as P. gaguedi using stem pubescence and dried flowerhead appearance http://ispot.org.za/node/160159 A grass fire was approaching, as you can see in the second photo
