22 000 Plant Records!
7 November 2012 - 11:20am — tony rebeloWe have reached 22 000 plant records!
OUR 20 000 PLANT RECORD:
http://ispot.org.za/node/169798 @ 18h53 on 14 November with Romulea hantamensis in On top of the Hantam, Calvinia by Alan Horstmann
---------------------------------------
Approaching 22 000 Plant records ...
iSpot ZA is fast approaching 22 000 plant records, which is the magic figure where our number of observations exceeds the number of plant taxa in southern Africa. In theory, we will have an average of 1 observation per species. In reality, we have between 4500 and 5500 plant taxa pictured and identified on iSpot (4 671 species and subspecies / varieties “Likely ID’d” by current name in the iSpot ZA dictionary): but a quarter of our flora illustrated on iSpot is not something to be scoffed at! And that excludes dozens of undescribed species already on iSpot - awaiting formal description and inclusion in our dictionary (which, for plants, is the latest version of PRECIS).
This has been a major effort by all involved. To all you who have and are contributing to this memorable achievement: we salute you!
Who will be the observer of the magic observation? What will be the species? What region will it come from?
Watch this spot as we approach this milestone ... http://ispot.org.za/stats%20update

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
* taxon (pl taxa): a species or subspecies, or family or subfamily. The name given to an observation at some taxonomical level.
** Number of species is only of those species linked to the dictionary. For instance most users identify the Outeniqua Yellowwood as Afrocarpus falcatus, which is in the dictionary as Podocarpus falcatus, or the Red Haartebeest as Alcelaphus caama which is in the dictionary as Alcelaphus buselaphus subsp. caama, so these are not included in the tally.
***(Note reputations are based on agreements by expert/ knowledgeable/ regular users – experts who contribute to novices scores will have low scores unless other experts agree with them. Thus experts contributing significantly to Identification rather than Observations, may have lower scores than regular iSpotters to whom they have ‘granted’ reputation. The total Reputation points within a group is a function of number of Observations submitted and the number of active experts. The quickest way to earn a Reputation is to submit lots of Observations of rare and interesting things and do your own accurate identifications using Scientific Names, that others will agree to).
**** iSpot ZA is geared to more groups than currently displayed. Our dictionary allows us to determine additional invertebrate groups, some of which are not yet included in the dictionary, so don’t feature here (e.g. Jellyfish, Sponges, Starfish, Worms)

Scarlet Broomrape Explosion?
Q? What is so special about Hyobanche sanguinea (Scarlet Broomrape) - why on earth does it have 47 observations?
Answer: Professor Andi Wolfe of The Ohio State University posted a request for data on Hyobanche sanguinea (http://ispot.org.za/node/130912), and users responded: many thanks! Dont forget to keep a lookout still - she is not finished.
