Habitat additions
The current marine habitat types really only covers habitats that divers will explore and there is a need for additional marine habitats. My suggestion is that rock pools, inter-tidal and beach is added to the list as Marine benthic isn't really an accurate description for these habitat types.

Littoral
Please use Littoral. As a habitat it existed long before we added Benthic.
Please make a very good case for subdividing Littoral into Beach, Rockpools and intertidal.
What about rocky areas, single, stone and sandy beaches. Upper beaches, mid-tide and lower beaches.
The problem with too many categories is that users will just give up and not fill them in. We need to strike the balance with enough scientific information versus too complicated to work out or bother to fill in.
I think "Littoral" does this admirably. It is a little clunky, and it used by both land and marine people for the area that could be in or out. But that is OK, it is not too difficult to work out the upper shore from the lower one.
Perhaps one might argue for a better title. Perhaps "Littoral" is literally too obtuse. Perhaps we should change it to "Shoreline" - or will that be more confusing?
More ideas will be appreciated.
Note that there is a Marine Forum - http://ispot.org.za/forum/7685 - perhaps this topic fits better there?
Specifically the rational for marine habitats is discussed at http://ispot.org.za/node/153284
