Spire 22mm long. Found attached to a grass stem. No sign of life. A hardened secretion closed the mouth of the shell, but it looks like an epiphragm rather than an operculum.

Location: Blyde River bushveld and wetlands near Hoedspruit

Shell:Relatively narrow.Colouring buff-whitish with pale brown axial streaks and little
grey spots.
Length up to 19 mm.
Habitat:Forest,woodland and Acacia savanna.
Distribution:Eastern South-Africa;Zululand into southern Mozambique.

aestivation

Just left of green stem ( 2nd photo down on left )you can clearly see a hole in the epipgragm. It is positioned directly above the pneumostome ( respiratory opening of the snail ) and admits air to enable it to breath during aestivation.

I was wondering if that were a breathing hole.

It is very warm an wet around here at the moment. Surprised to find any herbibore in aestivation.
