Electronic Resources:

Everyone seems to have standardized on Fishbase. Use it!

http://www.fishbase.org/home.htm

FishBase

I find the easiest way to search on Fishbase is: goto http://www.fishbase.org/search.php
Scroll down to "Information by family", select the family from the dropdown box, then tick "Identification by pictures".
wait....wait...wait

Then, if you're faced with too many species, narrow the search by selecting an ocean or by specifying the country.

another electronic resource

this is another fantastic webpage, you can browse photographs of likely species etc. by clicking on the "browse data" tab
